Record TOS 20 combines normal linear sliding with a mechanical breakout arrangement in the applicable complete door system. Mechanical breakout, battery-driven opening after power loss and a fire-alarm command are different functions. Identify each path before selecting equipment, planning installation or ordering repair parts.
Specify the required movement before specifying the model
An enquiry saying “TOS escape door, fail-open” leaves several questions unanswered. What moves, what initiates that movement, which leaves and side panels participate, and what happens in the actual locking and operating configuration?
The official four-page TOS factsheet describes the Total Opening System. In addition to normal sliding, the leaves and side panels can pivot by approximately 90 degrees in the relevant arrangement. It separately lists a battery for emergency opening after power loss as an option and says the emergency mode is configurable. The model name alone cannot settle the behaviour of an installed entrance during a power failure.
A complete door assembly and a drive module also have different scopes. Do not assume that changing an ordinary sliding-door controller provides the mechanical pivots, leaves, side panels and associated construction needed for the proposed breakout arrangement.
| Function to identify | Evidence to retain | Conclusion that cannot follow from the name alone |
|---|---|---|
| Normal sliding | Leaf grouping, travel, mode and everyday passage | That the normal opening equals the breakout passage |
| Mechanical breakout | Complete assembly, participating panels and movement area | That a drive-only purchase provides the structure |
| Power-loss behaviour | Battery, locks, mode, configuration and applicable documents | That every TOS opens electrically and stays open |
| Alarm and external interfaces | Required action, source, locking coordination and drawings | That breakout capability completes interface design |
| Return to service | Responsible personnel, checks, results and open items | That a visually realigned leaf is ready for automatic use |
This table is a specification aid, not a breakout, unlocking or reset procedure. Actual emergency use and site checks require the applicable instructions, local arrangements and trained personnel.
Keep the sliding opening and breakout layout separate
Sliding moves the leaves along the track. Breakout creates a different movement area. A plan with one sliding arrow does not show which obstructions affect the pivoting movement or where the panels will finish.
The cited TOS factsheet distinguishes dimensions A, F and G. Page 4 lists normal opening A, header length F and a rescue-route width of F minus 162 mm in its example. Page 2 limits the overview principally to a bilateral two-leaf, double-glazed system with side panels and a 150 mm drive height. Other leaf arrangements and versions need their own drawings. A drawing relationship must not become a universal site allowance.
Keep the dimension name, reference, drawing revision and operating state in the survey record. The project team must establish how the required usable passage is assessed for the actual entrance. The factsheet symbols do not replace that review.
Show adjacent walls, furniture, queue barriers, signs, door mats and other doors on the plan. Delivery practices and later fit-out changes also matter. An entrance originally designed with clear movement space may be used differently after handover; a mechanical review should not ignore that history.
Drive height and pivot capacity belong to the complete arrangement
The factsheet lists several drive heights but expressly limits use of the 108 mm version in TOS applications and calls for an assessment of the specific application. An enclosure-height substitution is therefore not automatically an equivalent proposal.
Its D-TOS leaf-weight entry is 2 × 100 kg in the stated source scope. The text relates the restriction to the swivel capacity of the pivot points, rather than just motor performance. This is a useful reason to examine the whole mechanical configuration. It is not an unconditional rating for all TOS assemblies or a basis for increasing leaf weight by changing a motor.
Keep the drive, leaves, side panels, pivot arrangement, locks and drawings in one configuration record. When a part or dimension changes, identify the affected condition and the person responsible for confirming it. Avoid combining fragments from different versions into a specification with no traceable scope.
Installation needs a coordinated site drawing
Check the fixing references, structural support, finishes, floor interfaces, sensors and maintenance access against the selected assembly. A cabinet occupying the breakout area is a layout issue; disabling a protective function is not a substitute for resolving it.
Assign electrical supply, access control, locking and alarm interfaces to the appropriate responsible parties. The interface documents should identify the required action and relevant operating conditions. This guide supplies no universal terminal numbers, bypasses or compatibility promises. References to European standards in source literature do not approve the design for every project location.
For a remote project, distinguish the purchaser's office, delivery point and actual construction site. A city name does not establish a local branch, stock or attendance arrangement. The international project enquiry guide explains how to separate supply and site responsibilities.
Report the sequence of a fault before naming a replacement
Tell the service team whether the problem began during normal sliding or after breakout, loading, cleaning or other work. Record the complete indication, operating circumstances and recent changes to locks, floor mats or surrounding fixtures. Obtain equipment labels and photographs only from a safe accessible position.
A displaced panel or uncertain mechanical connection may require isolation under site procedures. Do not repeatedly operate the door to demonstrate the problem, ask passers-by to test it, or bypass protection. A fault code from another version is not a reset instruction for this installation.
| Repair evidence | Relationship to preserve | Answer to request |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment identity | Entrance ID, complete model, assembly and control version | Applicable diagnostic documentation |
| Event sequence | Time, mode, breakout or construction events and full indication | Observed facts separated from diagnosis |
| Replacement part | Installed equipment, old-part and proposed-part identities | Compatibility, installation scope and checks |
| Site changes | Layout, flooring, locks and surrounding fixtures | Whether the existing proposal remains applicable |
| Handover | Actual work, configuration, results and unresolved matters | Conditions for use, recipient and follow-up responsibility |
An item appearing in a parts list does not prove that every installed version contains it. Match mechanical breakout components to the complete assembly rather than ordering by appearance. General parts identification and door safety evidence have separate guides.
Leave a usable record with the building operator
The recipient should receive the applicable operating and emergency information, responsible contacts, inspection results and unresolved items. A video of a few opening cycles is not a complete handover record. Inspection plans need the actual equipment, use and local requirements, with the relevant responsible personnel identified.
Download the original TOS structure and state review worksheet (CSV). It is a blank communication aid, not a manufacturer drawing, operating instruction or acceptance certificate. Supply, installation, warranty and attendance need separate confirmation; this guide offers no unverified market price, stock claim or service deadline.
Source scope and business enquiries
Reviewed on 2026-11-02: the official four-page English TOS factsheet, filename tos_factsheet_08_2019_en_web.pdf. Pages 1–2 explain mechanical breakout, options and configuration limits; pages 3–4 distinguish drawing references. The date fragment in a filename does not establish the version applicable to current supply. The cited overview is limited principally to the assembly described above.
Folding FTA/FBO and telescopic doors use different movements; neither can be specified from a TOS drawing. See the telescopic door guide and the Chinese folding-door evidence guide for those separate subjects.

Frequently asked questions
Does TOS 20 mean automatic opening after power loss?
No. The cited source distinguishes mechanical breakout from an optional battery for emergency opening, whose emergency mode is configurable. Equipment, battery, locks, operating mode and applicable documents must establish the actual power-loss behaviour.
Can an ordinary STA20 become a TOS by changing the controller?
A drive or controller name does not establish the complete breakout assembly. The leaves, side panels, pivots, associated components and installation conditions require their own configuration evidence.
Is the normal sliding opening the same as the breakout passage?
Do not assume they are equal. The official example uses separate dimensions and has a defined assembly scope. Keep the two layouts and measurement references, then review the actual usable passage for the project.
Are 108 mm and 150 mm TOS versions directly interchangeable?
No unconditional interchangeability follows from enclosure height. The cited factsheet identifies limitations for 108 mm TOS use and differences in arrangements and options, requiring a review of the specific configuration.
Should a door that fails after breakout simply be reset?
Preserve the event sequence, full indication and equipment information, then arrange investigation. Isolate hazardous movement or protection faults under site procedures; do not repeatedly run the door or bypass protection to obtain a result.
Does an enquiry confirm local installation and warranty support?
No. Confirm supply acceptance, site work, inspection, attendance and warranty responsibilities separately. A city name, telephone conversation or authorisation display does not establish local stock or an agreed service arrangement.
