Record door sensors: RAD, RIC, AIR, AIS 290 and BDE checks

Identify the component role, document its fit and record the replacement handover.

Choose a Record automatic door sensor by its role and its documented fit with the installed system. RAD 290 provides motion detection for opening impulses. RIC 290 combines microwave and active infrared motion and presence detection; AIR 290 also detects motion and presence. AIS 290 is listed for secondary closing edge protection. BDE-D and BDE-M are operating units. A matching connector or a shared 290 suffix does not establish interchangeability.

Opening a door and protecting its movement are separate questions

A door opening when someone approaches confirms an activation response under those conditions. It does not establish how the system responds to a person remaining in the passage, or how a different hazard beside a moving leaf is addressed. A quotation that lists “two sensors” leaves these functions unresolved.

The secondary closing edge is distinct from the meeting edge at the centre of a bi-parting entrance. The relevant hazard depends on leaf travel, fixed screens, walls and surrounding clearances. Identify the zones in the complete door design before choosing a device. The comparison below explains component roles; it does not prescribe a sensor quantity or approve an installation.

Identification Role supported by the reviewed sources What the enquiry still needs
RAD 290 Motion detector for opening impulses Exact part, detection field and documented controller/interface fit; an opening response is not proof of presence protection
RIC 290 Microwave and active infrared combination with motion and presence detection Device version, the separate detection fields and system configuration; one combined housing does not cover every hazard around a door
AIR 290 Active infrared motion and presence detection; also listed for confined-space applications Mounting arrangement, environment, appropriate controller and applicable instructions; do not classify it as presence-only
AIS 290 Active infrared device listed particularly for secondary closing edge protection Door geometry, zone to be protected, mounting position and its relationship to the actual operator
BDE-D Electronic operating/input-output unit with a display and relevant operating or setting functions Unit version, available functions and access permissions; its label does not identify the main control board
BDE-M Mechanical operating unit with a key switch for operating-mode selection Applicable system and fitted options; it does not identify the main board or locking equipment

A catalogue entry establishes a product description, not current availability for a particular market or suitability as a replacement. Ask for those answers against the actual door and proposed part.

Why AIR 290 and RIC 290 are not interchangeable by description

Both descriptions include motion and presence detection, but that overlap does not settle their suitability. The reviewed RIC 290 information specifies microwave and active infrared technology. AIR 290 mounting and adjustment instructions 102-290113312 C describe active infrared motion and presence detection. Calling AIR simply a safety photocell loses part of its stated function; treating it as a drop-in RIC replacement skips the installation and control-system questions.

The AIR instructions restrict its CAN interface to system 20 or suitable controls from other operator families, and specify Record-supplied cables. A reference to CAN does not establish a universal interface. Confirm the exact part, controller and version, interface requirements, communication compatibility and required cable arrangement. These checks belong to the authorised technical party, rather than an owner trying alternative connections.

Also review the intended environment. The same AIR instructions describe dry indoor or inner-side installation and refer to an optional weather shield for an outside application. A product name or an IP54 marking alone is insufficient evidence for an exposed location. Request an answer for the proposed mounting position, environment and protective accessories instead of assuming that a catalogue description covers the site.

Record the operating unit and main controller separately

“The controller has failed” is an uncertain starting point for ordering. BDE-D is visible to the user and can show useful status information. The main board may be inside the operator housing and require safe access by a qualified technician. Sending a photograph of BDE-D as the board identification can result in an operating-panel quotation that does not address the reported fault.

Use separate entries for the complete operator identification, the BDE operating unit and its full display message, and the main control component identification/version. Mark inaccessible information as awaiting technician confirmation. An ordinary user should not remove a cover, disconnect equipment or attempt resets merely to complete an enquiry sheet.

Record system 20 user manual 102-020110469 V2.7 describes BDE-D in section 4.1 and the key-operated BDE-M in section 4.5. These descriptions support the distinction between components. They are not a wiring reference for a different operator family or an unidentified board. Mode names also need to be read with the fitted locking and power arrangements; a “locked” selection does not establish the entire door's response to power loss or a fire input.

A useful fault report does not guess the replacement

An entrance that fails to open may have an activation, mode, access-control, locking, power, mechanical or control issue. A door remaining open may likewise have more than one cause. Record what happened before concluding that a sensor needs replacement.

Observed condition Information the operator can record from a safe position Matters for the technical investigation
No opening on approach Time, selected mode, full displayed message and affected side; do not repeatedly enter the leaf travel area to provoke it Activation input, access/lock state, supply and control records, considered alongside mechanical condition
Repeated opening or remaining open Whether it occurs at a particular time; changes to nearby objects, works or environment; full fault indication Detection fields, persistent inputs, operating mode and control state; the symptom alone does not identify a failed sensor
Reversal on closing, unsafe movement near a person or a contact incident Existing observations and messages; keep people out of the hazardous area and contact the maintenance party Safe site-specific arrangements, examination of detection, mechanics and control, followed by documented verification
New abnormal behaviour after replacement Old and new part identification, when and by whom the work was done, and available handover records Compatibility basis, installation/configuration changes, connections and monitoring, functional verification and recovery records

Reduced speed or an attendant does not restore a failed protective function. Follow the site's safety arrangements, control access to the hazardous area and arrange an alternative safe route where needed. The responsible party should determine how the equipment is secured or taken out of service using the applicable instructions and site conditions. Arbitrarily cutting power or locking an entrance can create a separate access problem.

Do not test protection with a hand or a person in the closing path. Do not bridge safety inputs, mask a detection zone or relax protective settings to remove a fault indication. Technical verification should use the methods and test objects specified for the applicable system, with results recorded.

Turn a replacement enquiry into an identifiable scope

Start with safely obtainable photographs of the door, operator data plate, externally visible original-part label, BDE display and existing service record. Keep unrelated people, access codes and other sensitive details out of the photographs. Leave access near live equipment, internal components and moving mechanisms to qualified, authorised personnel.

Ask the supplier to identify the proposed part number and revision, the basis for its fit with the existing control system, required cables or brackets, and responsibility for installation and commissioning. Where an obsolete component is being superseded, “new universal version” is not enough. Request the replacement basis, accompanying changes and any effect on existing functions.

Traceability is a separate check. Labels, packaging and documents can help establish identity, but no one item proves authenticity. Price is not an authentication method either. Retain the supplying party's details, exact part identification, delivery paperwork and a source statement for the actual delivery, then check that these records refer to the same item.

Keep the commercial scope explicit. A component-only price may exclude safe access, mounting parts, configuration, testing or disposal of the removed item. List the included and excluded work before comparing quotations; otherwise two apparently different prices may describe different deliverables.

Handover should say more than “the door moves”

Record the fitted component, any configuration changes, the document used, who carried out the work and the outcome of the applicable checks. Verification should address activation, relevant protective zones, operating modes, fault indications and affected interface functions according to the system documentation. Changes involving access control, locks, emergency power or other interfaces need their own review; one ordinary opening-and-closing cycle does not demonstrate them.

Some faults occur only in a particular operating mode or under the original reported conditions. Mark unobserved or unresolved items honestly, identify the responsible party and agree the next action. Component specifications, successful commissioning and acceptance of the complete entrance are separate conclusions.

Download the original blank sensor compatibility and replacement worksheet (English CSV). It is an enquiry and handover record, not a manufacturer compatibility list, test report or certificate of safety. The Chinese version of this guide provides the corresponding Chinese worksheet.

Source scope and enquiries from outside China

This guide was checked on 1 November 2026 against the official RAD 290 page, RIC 290 technology page, Record Sensor catalogue, AIR 290 mounting and adjustment instructions 102-290113312 C, and system 20 user manual 102-020110469 V2.7, dated 16 February 2023. The documents establish the roles and limits discussed here; they do not establish applicability to every installed unit or availability in every country.

Locks, touchless switches and standby power equipment require their own exact identification and application review. Record the intended function, interface and required fault or power-loss state for each. A common brand name does not turn these items into a universal accessory kit.

Frequently asked questions

Can RAD 290 alone be treated as anti-trap protection?

Do not equate an opening impulse with presence protection. RAD 290 is described as a motion detector for opening impulses. Protection of the passage and surrounding leaf movement needs to be established from the complete system design, actual configuration and applicable documentation.

Is AIR 290 a presence-only safety sensor?

No. The reviewed AIR 290 mounting and adjustment instructions describe active infrared motion and presence detection. Its actual role, detection fields and settings still depend on the correct version and installed configuration.

Can RIC 290, AIR 290 and AIS 290 be exchanged directly?

A shared suffix or similar connector does not establish interchangeability. Check the functional role, full part identification, appropriate control system, interface and communication requirements, mounting conditions and applicable documents, including the checks required after replacement.

Is BDE-D the main operator control board?

BDE-D is an electronic operating/input-output unit with a display. Identify the main control component separately. A BDE-D label or display message helps a fault report but does not replace the main board's part number and version.

Can a door with a safety-sensor fault keep running slowly under supervision?

Reduced speed and supervision do not restore the protective function. Control the hazardous area under the site arrangements and contact the maintenance party. The responsible personnel should determine securing and return-to-service conditions from the applicable instructions; do not bridge inputs or use a person to test protection.

Are replacement parts in stock or available worldwide?

Stock, lead time and price require confirmation for the actual part and supply scope. An enquiry from another country also needs a specific answer on supply arrangements and installation responsibility. This guide makes no worldwide availability or service commitment.
